Re: [birt-dev] New BIRT Logo

I think that I have clearly expressed my opinion therefore I will add no more words.

Nevertheless here is my logo in different formats and sizes:

BIRT-Logo:

png-format: https://github.com/eclipse/birt-website/blob/main/static/img/BIRT-03.png

pdf-format:  https://github.com/eclipse/birt-website/blob/main/static/img/BIRT-Logo.pdf

svg vector: https://github.com/eclipse/birt-website/blob/main/static/img/BIRT-Logo_V3_0.svg

bright and dark background: https://github.com/eclipse/birt-website/blob/main/static/img/BIRT-Logo-bright_and_dark_background.png

BIRT-Icon small (favicon): https://github.com/eclipse/birt-website/blob/main/static/img/BIRT-Icon.png

BIRT-Icon large: https://github.com/eclipse/birt-website/blob/main/static/img/BIRT-Icon-large.png

Explanation and basic thoughts on my logo design:

1.)    The BIRT logo consists of two parts: a figurative mark and a word mark, which together form the BIRT logo which is also a mark.

Each part can be used separately and independently as a BIRT recognition symbol, i.e. as a trademark. In the case of the word mark, this already results from the word, the figurative mark carries the meaning of BIRT, more on this below.

2.)    Color space: the color space symbolizes the modernity and freshness of BIRT especially the new start. Colors are subject to the shape and taste of the times, so the pictorial design of the brands are chosen to work with other color spaces as well.

The color space is chosen in such a way that it alone points to the BIRT brand as a color space. Thus, this color space is also used for the design of the Internet pages or for the web presence.

3.)    The word mark is self-speaking. The font chosen corresponds to the font specified by Eclipse and thus connects the BIRT logo, the BIRT brand with Eclipse and into the website and logo published by Eclipse.

The red I is intended to emphasize the business intelligence functionality, since for many end-users report was yesterday, today business intelligence tools are in demand. Furthermore, the red loosens up the lettering.

The "I" is intentionally written in small letters so that there is no confusion between i and L or l (small L) when used in normal text. Apart from that, this also emphasizes what is said under red beforehand and below.

4.)    The figurative mark: BIRT is used to make business intelligence reports and dashboards. BIRT reports are displayed on screens of different geometries, from mobile to 4K. To accommodate the different formats, an almost square frame was chosen to represent these device geometries. The square shape also has the advantage that it has no overhanging or underhanging parts and can therefore also be used as a font.

The two strokes in the square represent text-oriented reporting. By omitting one stroke, the image mark can be used very well with low resolution, e.g. as a favicon.

The curve symbolizes graphical evaluations typical of BI reporting and dashboards, the red of the line being included in the I of BIRT to illustrate the connection between BI and graphics and it has a good standing and makes the marks still recognizable when uses with low resolution e.g. as favicon.

5.)    The TM (Trade Mark) is a requirement provided by Eclipse. The TM was kept in the color space of Eclipse and connects the mark complementary to the typeface with the Eclipse appearance.

The TM is positioned below the T so that it does not protrude above the T and H lines (top and bottom lines of a typeface) and so that the word/image mark can also be integrated into continuous text.

6.)    The marks are all three available as vector graphics and can be scaled as desired.

7.)    I checked that the logo-files are usable with professional tools like the adobe toolset and also with the open source tool inkscape.

Best

Christophe

It was suggested we run a 99designs campaign and the foundation would cover the costs of anyone that pays up front.

My company frequently uses 99designs, so I set we would front the money to make it happen.

I suggested that on this email.

One person (Wim) said great, so I did it.

99designs is not perfect, but I will take the time to put all submissions in Bugzilla, and anybody can vote the ones we want.
I will use the Bugzilla votes to manage the 99designs process.

I will post Christophe's design in the Bugzilla portion of the contest.

If his is the winning design, he won't get any prize, but we will use his design on the website. (Christophe has indicated he would donate the money to the foundation anyway)
The second place design (the one that wins on 99designs) will get the prize.

Will that be acceptable to everyone?

Hi Nico,

Hi All,

as I am also from Germany let me answer:

Yes there are contest where participants are not paid, but in these contest, the participants don’t have to go through a board and work as if they were employed. Next a participant wins he/she gets the whole merit, which is not the case here. In the architecture business participants are often paid. In Swizzerland they must(!) be paid which I think should be the normal legal terms.

As German you certainly know that for example the meantime on the housing market the housing owner pays the broker not the housing seeker. It should also be the same here. But 99Designs selects who can participate, and treats those persons as if they were employees, similar to Uber.

Fairplay would be: 99Design (broker)  gets paid by the one asking for a contest (house woner), everybody can compete and the winner holds the advertised winning sum. I believe that transparency is part of fair play.

As you can read in the previous mails I never contested to participate in a contest and compare what others can contribute. I am a sportsman. But I don’t want to compete under unfair conditions especially if it is exploiting persons.

I apologize that I have triggered a discussion that takes us away from the actual topic. We all want a super good new homepage. That's what I'm standing up for and on which I will concentrate now.

Thanks for your support against unfairness. I appreciated all comments.

Best

Christophe

Hello,

I am also from Germany, and while I would instantly second Christophes attitude towards social security, I'm not sure that 99designs "business model" can be simply characterized as exploitation.

It is, in my option, quite difficult to "buy" or "order" a logo design or anything similar, where the appraisal (I'm not sure thats the correct term) of the result is so much dependent on personal taste. It is, in fact, quite common to create contests for artistic work, for example architectural contests, where the participants don't get paid for their effort if they don't win (here, often even the winner can only pay a fraction of his expenses). It might be nice if everyone competing would get at least a small compensation, but that is not really possible with fixed budgets and would also lead to low performance being lucrative.

1.) I have no chance to submit my logo as I will not apply as a “fulltime” designer. My task are other ones.

2.) I will not support this kind of business model and therefore I will not support 99Designs, as I explained in my last mail.

I support Christophe here.

And I even think that the whole idea of creating a contest is pure overkill. There are other things to do, this whole logo discussion only costs us time and other ressources.

Disclaimer: I am a developer from Germany and aged >=50, I have no relation to Christophe's company and this is my personal opinion (probably not mainstream), no offence meant: I think Christophe's logo is a bit too colourful. In all other respects I like it. Anyway, the logo doesn't really matter to me. I understand Christophe's explanations about the ideas behind the logo. Furthermore, Christophe has spent considerable effort for the new logo and web site and this should be rewarded.

To put a long story short: I support Christophe's logo - I won't even look at others.

Henning
