Re: [rt-pmc] Runtime platforms on the eclipse download page

Thanks for the discussion. Let me try to respond to a number of the points raised.

-        Listing all the RT project on the eclipse.org/download page is just not an option for two reasons: 1) We want to keep the download page simple and sliding carousels are generally considered bad ui design. We need to have a page that is static so people know what to expect. 2) if we list all the RT projects then why don’t we list all the Tools or Technology projects. Following this thought process, why don’t we have a carousel for each top-level project. We would quickly get to a situation with a download page that looks like the All Project page that we already link to.

-        If you want a page with all the RT downloads accessible, please create it. We will link to it under the Technology Communities section.

-        The container criteria was intended to scope what was on the download page. I didn’t realize it was a confusing term. It might be a mistake to be listing RAP as a project. I can fine with having Jetty, Equinox and Concierge as the projects listed. I think it is clear they all are container by the Wikipedia definition.  I do believe Vert.x will be in the same situation.

-        Jesses I agree one reason is definitely to showcase the diversity of the Eclipse community. I do hope/believe it will also help some of the projects and communities. You might be surprised that more people discover Jetty. J

I dont agree with Scott that often, but I do in this case 100% actually. :-)

I get to hear that Riena is based on RCP and therefore its container is Equinox. How is that not true for RAP, ECF and many other runtime projects and still they get mentioned. And actually Riena is "using" RCP and not based on RCP. Hence a Riena application can not be run as an RCP application (and actually we are discussing to remove our dependency on RCP altogether)

Distinguishing what gets on the download page by some artificial "container" vs "something else" category is wrong in my opinion. Why is a container better or more appropriate in the first place ?

We are all runtime projects ! I like the idea of taking Neon runtime projects and take some random 5 each time the page is displayed. Or you show a top 5 or top 10 list depending on download numbers / users or that kind of info.

If only containers like Equinox get mentioned than we only need 1 or maybe 2 entries. :-)

just my 2 cents

I don't think I'm fully understanding what you are saying but with that caveat I would add:     these are all Eclipse runtime projects we are talking about, and many of those project represent osgi technologies (for obvious historical, technical, and other reasons).

Whether they are osgi technologies or not, many projects need discovery and promotion...and don't get enough of it (IMO).

FWIW, I would argue against selection criteria that was based upon whether a project was osgi tech or not.   The project I represent is an osgi tech project (ECF), but I would not be comfortable with that as selection criteria.

The definition of 'container' is so massively overridden these days the term hardly has meaning.

Yeah, exactly...which is why it doesn't make good selection criteria.

Taking a step back I hardly think that this download page (or any similar download page anywhere at eclipse) is going to make but a very small handful of people find a download they are not already looking for.

I disagree with this.   I think it could be true for the download use cases Jetty/Jesse is mostly interested in (people looking for Jetty specifically...probably most likely to go to Maven central Jetty separate from Eclipse).   But for other projects...e.g. ones that are relatively new extensions to OSGi frameworks, RCP, and/or Eclipse tooling such as ECF remote services and others...I don't think your analysis holds.  In those cases their biggest problem is that no one knows about the work because it gets no exposure/promotion, and being viewed by more people can/does matter.

It does suggest to me that if a project like Jetty doesn't really get much benefit from being on the main download page (because everyone is looking elsewhere already) then perhaps it shouldn't be in the set of 5 selected projects that are on the download page.
