Re: [technology-pmc] Pending Microprofile Committer Elections

Hi guys,
Just a few words from the MP project lead...

Some people were mixing the project structure and other project politics with some of these recent committer nominations.  I called them on it.  And, we had a very good discussion on our weekly hangout this past Tuesday.  As you might have seen, some of these people did end up changing or adding to their nomination comments to indicate other reasons for their abstains.

We also discussed other means of pre-discussing proposed committers before they are put up for a vote.  As Wayne knows, many of us also work on Apache projects and we're very used to having a private channel to discuss proposed committers before putting them up for a public vote.  I explained how that's not the "Eclipse way", but we still want something like this.  We're exploring some possible means of performing these pre-vote committer discussions.  If we find something that works for us, we will report back our results.

I'll also point out that I am okay with the veto(s) that occurred on the recent votes.  It's fine to put this back in our court and figure out a process that works for us.  As Wayne knows, the MicroProfile project consists of several components.  In many cases, the activity on one of these components may not be as visible to the rest of the project membership. Not that anything is being done in a non-public way.  It's just a matter of people being extremely busy and not always knowing everything that is happening in the wider project.

Thanks,
Kevin

Comments like this bother me, as it suggests that the abstention is unrelated to the actual fitness of the individual and more as a political play. The context of the other comments, however, I'm going to assume that this isn't the case.

I am abstaining as I think we need to initiate a project restructuring into sub-projects.

If I read between the lines, I believe that the actual problem is that at least some committers don't trust that new committers will restrict themselves to repositories in their area of expertise and they feel a need to have finer grained control over write access.

Other than that, it looks like the process is working. IMHO, the comments by the abstainers are sufficient to explain why the election was problematic, and I stand behind Eric's veto.

Hi Wayne,

Do you have more background on the Mircroprofile Committer Elections? It seems that the community has some issues. There were many abstains from the votes. Reading through the comments I was wondering whether those should actually have been veto's.

Some of the comments sound really concerning. I'm particularly concerned about the communication issues that have been raised. However, I don't have enough data to make a clear decision.

@PMC please take some time to read through the comments.
