RE: [technology-pmc] Do we really need the SOC project?

Oooh, that hurts Mike. Can you cut the newbie some slack? :)

At least as far as the "Research Stream" is concerned, I am not sure that these projects are sufficiently different from the "Incubator Stream" projects to justify a different label. In my view they are just incubators that are less likely to make it.

I am less clear on the "Education Stream". Do we have an example of such a project right now? What does a life cycle of such a project look like? These wouldn't be feature projects that would ever be able to move anywhere else, yet I can see projects like this persisting for a long time. Projects in this stream (assuming they exist) don't seem to fit with the "limited life span" statements on the Technology Project's home page:

http://www.eclipse.org/technology/

Projects under the Eclipse Technology Project have limited lifecycles. Unlike the other top-level Projects, the Technology Projects are meant to be technology explorations or incubators. When these projects have explored, proved, or disproved their associated technologies, the project comes to its natural end. For some projects, this end is a paper publishing the research results; for others, this end is to be incorporated into the base technology of another top-level project.

Has the PMC read the charter[1] lately?

Incubation is only one of the missions of the Technology PMC.

On a related note, it is likely time to have the charter re-vamped. It is
obviously aged :-)
