I'm not sure that we should separate items such as these icons from the
overall brand identity. The identity should be consistent across Hyades
as a whole, from these small icons to more obvious graphics that we
might use in marketing and other materials. From that perspective, and
because of the high level of collaboration between vendors within
Hyades, I think it would be useful for the planning group to be able to
see the updated icons.
I know that the Eclipse marketing committee would be keen to see these
icons and give us the benefit of their extensive experience on this
subject, particularly at this time when we are aiming to build and
develop the Hyades brand, within the larger Eclipse brand.
The marketing team has indicated that it would like to see the updated
icons once the Hyades planning group has had a chance to see and discuss
them.

We are talking about different things.
This icon refresh was expected for some time, and is about all the
little graphics in the UI for buttons etc. Eclipse has moved to a newer
look and feel that is softer colors etc. That means thousands of little
graphics have to change. This is that work, not the brand graphics,
which as you both have noted is a bigger and different process.

I'm not sure whether the Media Team (who presumably are part of IBM)
watch this mailing group and they may not be aware of the Eclipse/Hyades
internal processes.
Visual identity, trademarks, PR, positioning etc. are controlled top
down from the Eclipse Foundation (currently through the Eclipse
marketing group which was constituted by the board of stewards
pre-incorporation) and not bottom up through the
committers/developers/contributors. They are one of the few things that
the foundation itself actually owns (or rather plans to own). The
process is a bit wooly at the moment, as is the scope of what is
considered visual identity by Eclipse, but we need to see this kind of
stuff surfaced at the Hyades Management Call through (in IBM's case)
either Serge or Harm, and Melanie then coordinates with the relevant
Marketing and PR groups within Eclipse which are chaired by Mike Taylor
and Mark Johnson of Instantiations.
We can start going through the process and asking the questions, but in
the meanwhile we should try and avoid blocking the process whilst
getting some consensus amongst the contributing companies whose current
and future products are affected by this change. Once we have sight of
the visual identity on this email distribution we should allow 48 Hours
for objections (fed through the various planning group representatives)
then people should make the change in CVS on the assumption that the
issue won't be blocked at the Eclipse level if it is perceived as the
settled will of the 6 companies with planning group representation.

Yes, this is for all of Hyades, including the Log and Trace Analyzer.
The media team refreshed all org.eclipse.hyades* plugins that had icons.

Certainly, I will send you a copy once I have them all. I'm not sure at
what level the icons were raised; the media design team was working on
these even before I inquired about it.

Hi,
I have to say that, even though I am certain these new and updated icons
will work well, I would have expected this issue to be raised at the
Hyades project level and the PMC level, subsequently. I am not aware
that the Hyades planning group has been advised of the requirement for
updated icons.
I am also unsure whether the Eclipse marketing committee should be asked
to approve these, as it's not a subject that is raised very often. As I
represent Hyades at the marketing committee meetings, I would be willing
to take these updated icons to the committee to seek this approval, if
required.
Could you, Curtis, or the component owners, please send me a copy of
these when available?

Folks,
I have received most of the updated Hyades icons (new lighter theme) and
will probably have them all within a day or two. I will be mailing out
the zips to the owner of each component as soon as I have them all.
Please open a bug to track this on your component and send it out for
review once you get the icons. I'm assuming no one will have objections
to the icon refresh.
