Solution: Install Helios under ~/bin and be done with it[1]. Not sure
why a minor-point version change so badly breaks Eclipse when it's
installed under /opt as root but there you go. I've been doing this for
about 4 releases of Eclipse and this is the first time it's broken this
badly.

I feel a rant coming on, but this is not the appropriate venue for it so
I'll spare everyone.

[1] To hell with clean system management and minimal backup sets. Disk
space is cheap especially when the disks are someone else's... ;)
