1.4.2 is a priori not enough. I think you need at least 1.5.0_06 or 
something like that (currently at 1.5.0_11).
Look at http://g95.sourceforge.net/howto.html#photran to have a recent 
step by step procedure for beginners to compile a simple hello_wolrld.f 
program.
