Re: [epp-dev] Still justified to ship Mylyn with almost all distributions?

Hi

The compromise discussed on https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=480696 seems appropriate.

Put Mylyn Tasks in the same view stack as the Outline.

Mylyn is a significant UI enrichment, useful for some. It deserves a prominent initial appearance. There are too many views to expect users to discover it and then Show View. Why isn't it in the Modelling EPP Modeling perspectivce?

Users who don't want Mylyn can easily close the view. Users who dislike Mylyn can roll their own Eclipse.

  Hi,

I think it is fine that Mylyn is include in the EPPs, as it is really
stable and useful for its users.

The one thing they could improve IMHO is not to add their views to
standard perspectives. Several of my customers complained about that
in the past. Not sure what the guidelines for Eclipse contributions
are but Mylyn is AFAIK the only plug-in which does that.

Unfortunately, https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=480696
was rejected.

So maybe an improvement would be to keep Mylyn but remove its views
from standard perspectives? This would reduce annoyance for none Mylyn
users and Mylyn users could simply open these views.

Hi Arne,

The Git repository you've been looking at only contains build and distribution related stuff. So the commit messages would be just as you described.

I assume when you say "Mylyn" you actually mean "Mylyn Tasks" which yes, is very mature and stable. So the activity in it's Git repository[1] would be a poor indicator of whether or not it is alive.

I really do like Mylyn Tasks and use it all the time, I know many others do too. However bringing up this question is fair. We just find to find a usable metric to determine whether or not remove Mylyn Tasks from the distributions. It would be better to find out how many actually use it.

Note that there is also Mylyn Docs (mature but still quite active), Mylyn Reviews (with the Gerrit connector Wayne), Mylyn Builds and Mylyn Versions.

Hi all,

not sure how requests to remove plugins from eclipse distributions are
to be formulated nor how the process is to initiate such a removal. But
what I observed is this: Mylyn seems to be more or less dead.

If I look at the commit log there where 15 comits in the last 6 month.

http://git.eclipse.org/c/mylyn/org.eclipse.mylyn.git/log/

Mostly they were concerned with update of plugin versions and adaption
to photon release. End of 2017 there where four month in succession
without any commit at all. Hence from a community perspective there seem
to be little interest to fix issues, let alone implement new features.

One of the first things I do myself when starting a fresh eclipse is
closing the Mylyn Task View. Probably there are users that actually use
Mylyn. But my question is: Is it still justified to ship this plugin
with almost all eclipse distributions?

https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/compare.php?release=photon

For me it would be better to remove it from eclipse main distributions
and allow additional installation through an update site. I guess the
majority will be more happy with smaller footprint, while users that
actually need Mylyn can still install it. Happy for your feedback about
this request.

Kind regards,
Arne Deutsch
