Re: [epp-dev] PHP Package

I'm not on vacation, in fact, the opposite is true. I'm extremely busy with another project that eats up all my time and most of my energy. That as an excuse why I didn't respond so far.

Yes, I'd be happy to see such a package again, kind of an old acquaintance. It was quite popular and its disappearance wasn't a good sign that we sent out to the community. I'll have a look at the contribution from the bug.

Thanks for stepping up...

Regards,
Markus

Jacek,

I didn't realized you had left Zend. Diversity is good and it would be great to have the PHP package back.

Markus is the guy who can start building it but he *might* be on vacation/

I'm not affiliated with Zend since several months. I'm doing Eclipse
and Java consulting now and working on PDT part time only. In the past
I was anyway verifying PDT packages, so I thought it'd be about the
same effort to maintain EPP-PHP packages. That'd be a win for Eclipse
PHP users, who now have to install Java IDE first, before getting PDT.
No wonder they choose vim!

As for Zend, they have their own free package competing with EPP-PHP,
which in past was making it very hard for Zenders to get involved in
EPP as well. Now as far as I can see this free package is fairly
outdated (based on Indigo [1]) and Kaloyan is volunteering here, so I
read it as a good sign.

That way me and Kaloyan makes for some diversity. :-)

I'm not too hurry to introducing new package. It'd be fine to start
building it automatically and then give it some period of testing,
during which small PDT early-adopters community would be able to
download it and try (without announcing the package anywhere). Then,
the package could be added to downloads for SR2, or Luna. That could
also be a small test of whether the package lasts.

How much effort does new package add for the EPP team?

I have a few doubts about bringing back the PHP package. As you may know
we
had a package that was reasonably successful but for some reason it was
stopped. I think this sent a really bad signal to our community.
Therefore, bringing it back without some level assurance that it will stay
does
not seem like a great idea.
Well, there are really no guarantees in life. I am guessing that Jacek and
Kaloyan have the support of Zend in doing this. Can you guys confirm that
this is the case?

But I would definitely prefer to see some diversity in the package
maintainers.

I think the other issue is that as I recall, adding packages after the
release train ships is typically not done. Ian, can you enlighten us as to
the policies and precedents here?
