I understand your concern around "never touch a running system". However, if we continue to think inside those limitations we'll never able to come up with a general solution but only workarounds. 

I’m just repeating what (I think) Tom Watson said on some email thread a long time ago, why Equinox works as this today.

I’m ready to challenge the current status quo :-)
