Re: [dtp-dev] Cross-subproject component needed in bugzilla

John,

I would like to open a defect proposing a change to the layout of the preference page nodes.  This defect affects both sqltools and connectivity now but could impact any other sub-projects with plans for preference pages.  I would like to open a defect in a DTP-wide component for the purpose of discussion and review.  I could then open individual defects for each sub-project with actual work items that might come out of the discussion.  The general defect would then depend on the individual defects.  When the individual defects are closed then the general defect would be closed.  People could add themselves on the CC list for either the general defect if they only care about when the whole item is done or the individual sub-project defects if they are interested in those specifically.

The component could be used for any DTP wide issues where multiple sub-projects could be involved including general work items.  In WTP, we used such a category and process for handling copyright notice updates and Bugzilla defect clean-up.  It could be used to track any cross-project work item resulting from the PMC or team lead meetings.  The recent database support testing could have been tracked this way.

Want an outsiders view? I've occasionally had to move a bug to datatools, mistakenly entered against WTP, and I have no idea what your "product" or "components" mean.
So, I think a general "datatools" product/component would help folks like me. Otherwise, I'm just picking one, nearly at random, and hope that one will triage it to the appropriate bucket.
It would probably be better to have one, that John could watch, :)  that novices like me could pick, just to get it in your system, and you all could triage from there.

Perhaps that could hold "cross project" ones too?

Larry,

There might be a need for such a generic component in BZ, but in the past
we've usually entered one BZ entry (at least) for all involved
sub-projects, since typically different people will do the work at
different times, and hence having separate bugs is easier to track.

Don't know -- can you give more details about the specific case, and
perhaps others on this list have similar experiences/input to add?

I am trying to open a defect for a cross-subproject issue and could not
figure out a component to specify.  Did I miss something?  If not, I think
it would be good idea to have a component for tracking issues that apply to
all of DTP and can also be used for cross-subproject issues.  It could
simply be called "DataTools".
