Description Amit Rana CLA 2004-12-02 02:58:08 EST
Following is what I get when eclipse crashes:

I went to Sun's site to report this (as mentioned in the dump) but I decided to
post it here because of following text, please let me know if this should be
reported to sun.

<from Sun site>

Comment 1 Amit Rana CLA 2004-12-02 04:09:46 EST
eclipse version- 3.1M3
Version: 3.1.0
Build id: 200411050810

JDK- j2sdk1.4.2_06
OS-Fedora core 3 (2.6.9-1.667)
Comment 2 Pascal Rapicault CLA 2004-12-02 08:37:37 EST
What were you doing when the crash occured?
Do you have anything in the .log?
Comment 3 Amit Rana CLA 2004-12-03 04:00:27 EST
-No logs do not have anything.
-Eclipse crashes anytime, sometimes just after start, sometimes when I try to
open an editor, sometimes when I try to open a Menu

by the way, when I start ecipse using IBM jdk (eclipse -vm) it works ok.
Basically, eclipse only crashes when using sun jdk and when RAM is almost full
and system is using SWAP as well.
Comment 4 John Arthorne CLA 2005-01-11 16:35:09 EST
There is very little useful information in the VM error report. It says on the
last line:

[error occured during error reporting]

This suggests to me some internal VM corruption. Please reopen here if you are
able to get a stack dump that shows Eclipse code is running at the time of the
failure.
Comment 5 Marcus krause CLA 2005-01-25 05:27:15 EST
The same occures here with:
eclipse 3.1M4 with
every single version of j2sdk1.4.2_06 and j2re1.4.2_07
Comment 6 Skhiri Sabri CLA 2005-01-27 03:32:27 EST
The same occures here with:
eclipse 3.1M4 with my fedora 3 with jdk: Sun 1.4.2_06, blackdown 1.4.2.rc1 and
Sun 1.5.0_01.
The latest crash (with JDK 1.5) gives this log:
#
# An unexpected error has been detected by HotSpot Virtual Machine:

installed SuSE 9.2 which has java build 1.4.2_05-b04. I have been running #
with -Xint for 3 months (which really is annoying...)

Browsing the JDC shows several bugs with this HotSpot failure ID, some fixed,
some not, all complicated and hard to track. Most indicate this has to
do with eclipse opening a large number of files at the same time (and
I get the crash either on startup or while doing CVS synchronize!), some
suspect the gfx card driver.

Although this issue is most probably not caused by Eclipsed, it would be
worthwhile to help sun people fix the bug, or provide a workaround in eclipse.
Comment 8 Oded Arbel CLA 2005-02-07 05:00:31 EST
I have the same issue with j2sdk 1.4.2-05, j2sdk 1.4.2-06, jdk 1.5.0 and jdk
1.5.0-01 on Mandrake Linux.
Ever since I upgraded to current cooker (since about 1 month ago) Eclipse
crashes every time I run it - either immidietly (before even the workspace
selector comes up) or after I start working.

It crashes with both GTK and Motif versions although the motif version crashed
with a different error (and I got a java stack trace) so I'm not sure its
related.

I tried to use 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1M3 and M4 and several post-M4 integration builds
- all behave the same way.

I noticed that if I set the system locale to en (different from what I usually
use which is en_US.utf8) then eclipse stays up the most time - maybe even 10
minutes.

Ever since the above mentioned upgrade, I also had unexpected crashes in
Mozilla applications and OpenOffice which I thought may be related to a GTK+2
issue, though these are more rare then Eclipse's crashes and other GTK+2
applications (for example: evolution) seems to work fine.

I found a page on the net describing fix done to some kind of Java based
product to work around an issue with the same error ID as this and thought it
may be related, so here it is:

Sorry, that was too quick, but for me, this runs much longer
than without, eclipse is faster, and the crash looked somewhat
different. Maybe this has some informational value after all.

I am getting the same JVM crash behaviour on SUSE 9.1 with M4 (gtk) and various
Sun 1.4 JDK's. Setting -vmargs -Dosgi.locking=java.io seems to have no effect at
all. Seems like Sun lay the blame with Eclipse saying it's something in the 3rd
party product and Eclipse dev's lay the blame with Sun saying it's a VM bug.
Can't we all just get along and try figure out how to fix this?
Comment 13 Rafael Chaves CLA 2005-02-18 13:22:16 EST
Sun is not blaming Eclipse, is actually asking us to investigate the
circumstances the problems happens in the context of running Eclipse. The
problem is that we need to reproduce it consistently. Since we cannot, and the
VM dump just does not leave any clue on when the problem happens, we need help
from the users experiencing this problem. So far, it seems the problem happens
randomly, sometimes during startup, sometimes while performing user actions. We
need to find out a single simplest flow that always (or at least often enough)
causes the crash. Can anybody provide a test case that works at least in their
own setup?

Comment 17 Tom Eicher CLA 2005-02-18 15:31:53 EST
There's more to it than just Sun or Eclipse.
The collegue sitting opposite to me has the very same Hardware (Dell D800),
the very same Java version, the very same Linux (SuSE 9.2 supplied kernel),
also a 3.1 milestone and for him it does not crash.
I tried 4 different JREs today, from 1.4.0 (eclipse doesn't work ;-), 1.4.1
(crash) and different 1.4.2s (all crash). Last week I tried different eclipse
milestones.
Maybe it is related to having or not having some kernel settings, or having (or
not) installed some SuSE packages...

Since the osgi.locking thing issue, I am suspecting some filesystem or
device driver issues. (we both have ide dma on, so that'S not it).

Anyway, I will try with some IBM JRE, maybe that's good for a change. I will
keep you posted...
Comment 18 Tom Eicher CLA 2005-02-18 16:11:35 EST
Was restless, had to try. ;-)

Indeed, IBM JRE 1.4.2 looks very promising.
When usually I crashed during startup, I just did 5 refreshes and 10
clean/builds and it worked well.

And it's a lot faster than Sun JRE with -Xint ;-)

http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/linux140/

What are your experiences ?
Comment 19 Mass Dosage CLA 2005-02-19 05:59:03 EST
I have a very similar experience, M4 works perfectly on the exact same version
of SUSE and kernel on my work machine but on my home machine (different hardware
admittedly) no 1.4 versions of Sun's JDKs work. It never runs for more than one
or two "open editor" clicks. The thing is that 3.01 works fine so something must
have been introduced inbetween which is causing this. I haven't tried the IBM
JDK but will do so this weekend and let you know on Monday if that helps. That's
still more of a workaround than a fix though.
Comment 20 Mass Dosage CLA 2005-02-21 05:39:05 EST
IBM 1.4 JDK works fine as Tom experienced too. Oh well, at least I can use M4
now although it's not 100% ideal as the production system is running Sun's JDK
and it's always best to develop against a system that's as close to production
as possible.

This didn't help. Tried out with IBM 1.42, Sun 1.4.2_05,_07 and other fixes
mentioned here. The interesting part for me is that if I remove qtengine for GTK
path I get the following GTK error

(<unknown>:2695): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path:
"qtengine",

but eclipse keeps running for quite a long while before crashing. And when it
crashes, its usually when I try to switch between 2 open files in the editor of
usually 2 different types like txt and java

A little more checking on Google turned this out
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4820592

Sun claims that this has been fixed on 1.5, so downloaded 1.5.0_01. So far so
good (this is with qtengine included in path). Will report back if the error
resurfaces.

Well, I have been running for 2 weeks now with no crash, so for me IBM JRE
works great. Your problem must be something different than mine.

Concerning the bug parade link, if you search a bit more, you will see that
there is a large number of bugs with that exact hotspot crash, some fixed, some
not. So maybe the solution is a bit different for everybody of us ;-)
Comment 25 Oded Arbel CLA 2005-03-07 05:51:41 EST
I had the same problem on a Linux Mandrake 10 (comment #8), using kernel
2.6.3. I've seen a similar behavior on other computers running 2.6.7 and 2.6.8
(the last one very infrequently).

I recently upgraded to 2.6.10 kernel from Mandrake and have since had no more
issues with crashing eclipse regardless of the JVM in use. note: only the
kernel was upgraded.

I am experiencing the same phenomenon, but MORE CONSISTENTLY!
My Eclipse crashes 3 of 4 times during startup,
the remaining 1 of 4 times it crashes within the next 30 to 60 seconds.

The following combinations of Eclipse and Sun VM procude interesting results:
- JDK 1.5.0_01 with Eclipse 3.1M4 does neither crash my notebook, nor my desktop
PC
- JDK 1.5.0_01 with Eclipse 3.1M5a with the 3.1M4 workspace crashes my notebook
as describes above, but the desktop does not crash.
- JDK 1.5.0_01 with Eclipse 3.1M5a and a new workspace crashes much much less
often.

Perhaps it helps that I submit my 3.1M4 workspace to produce the crash on your
machines too? So I did.

Good luck!

I had a similar bug. (It was Error Code 1 but also Error ID:

I used eclipse 3.0.2 with jdk 1.4 as provided with suse 9.2.
I then tried with the IBM jre 1.4. Didn't work - now i got error Code 13 shortly
after startup.
Finally i got it to work by using jdk 1.5 and specifiying the vm path as
commandline argument.

I had a similar error, and tried multiple VM's with the similar results (i.e. a
crash each time). I narrowed it down to SWT's GTK bindings, as the crash does
not occur with the Motif version. Finally, my fix was to choose a different GTK
theme, the crash only seems to occur with me with the "Thin Keramic" theme
(unfortunately the default on SuSe).

I will withhold judgement on whether this is a bug in GTK, the "Thin Keramic"
style engine, or SWT itself...
Comment 34 Billy Biggs CLA 2005-04-20 16:36:27 EDT
Careful, there are a few different problems all reported on this bug now.

TheReincarnator: Your crash log is from a Windows machine. Please file a new
bug for this issue.

Others: There are some known issues with the gtk-qt theme engine shipped with
SuSE 9.2. Please see bug 77928 for more information. This bug is tracking
crash logs that have no stack trace, only a cryptic VM error ID, which may be
bugs in the Sun VM.
Comment 35 Kramer CLA 2005-05-16 03:35:15 EDT
I just noticed that the previous comment is similar to the contents below.
However, I still posted this comment to make the previous statement more
transparent.

After reading the comments I think that I may have been encountered the same
error. I noticed in one of the posts that the person had problems with the
library:
     libgobject-2.0.so.0
I also had a problem with this library and when eclipse (and firefox for that
matter) would try to start a SIGSEV signal was caught (aka a segmentation fault
occured). As a result, eclipse (and firefox) would not start.

It is important to note that I was using Suse 9.2 and was currently running KDE
3.3.0. I then tried to start eclipse after starting a failsafe session (with
only X running) and eclipse started fine. Indeed when I started gnome, Eclipse
would also run fine.

I looked into the rpms that I had recently installed and found one that looked
suspicious, 'gtk-qt-engine-0.6cvs20050229-4.1' I did an rpm erase (aka 'rpm -e
gtk-qt-engine-0.6cvs20050229-4.1') of this package. After I did so, Eclipse
and Firefox would start fine.

In one person's post, he said that he and his colleage had the same Suse
installation. However, his eclipse wouldn't work but hist colleage's would.
This could have been due to the packate 'gtk-qt-engine-0.6cvs20050229-4.1'. In
fact, if I remember correctly, Yast offered to install this package for me.
Thus, if someone just checked all of the available packages to install/upgrade
or had a fully automatic upgrade, it would have been easy to have eclipse work
one day and not the next (assuming this package is the one and only one to
blame).

I hope this is helpful.

I have found a fix for this,

The problem has much less to do with eclipse than the java clutter on a computer.

1. remove the gcc java lib and any java RTE JDK SDK etc.. using yum aptget this includes the IBM ones.
2. cd /usr/lib/
3. ll ./j*
4. do rm -r -f on all java related files
5. cd /usr/java
6. rm -r -f *
7. cd /usr/bin
8. ll ./j*
9. look for the broken links java related and remove them
10. cd /etc/alternatives/
11. ll ./j*
12. look for the broken links java related and remove them
13. download and install the java JDK 1.5.0_08
14. export the java paths this is a fedora example:

create /etc/profile.d/java.sh

#!/bin/sh
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jre1.5.0_08
export JAVA_HOME
JAVA_BIN=$JAVA_HOME/bin
CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:$JAVA_HOME:$JAVA_HOME/lib
PATH=$JAVA_BIN:$PATH
export JAVA_BIN CLASSPATH PATH

15. reboot
16. run eclipse

You will want to reconfigure applications like mozilla to the new java if it has installed in a new location/version. Here is the usual command:

ln -s /usr/java/jdk1.5.0_08/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
 /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

Hope this works, :)
