Description Lars Vogel CLA 2018-01-16 09:56:43 EST
To continue your menu simplification of the Eclipse menu, I suggest to move the recently opened documents into a sub-menu "Recent documents" or something similar. This seems very common for other tools, like LibreOffice or IntelliJ.

This would also allow us to add more entries to the recently used list.
Comment 1 Lars Vogel CLA 2018-01-16 09:57:29 EST
Mickael, WDYT about the suggestion?

I'm OK if we at same time increase the default from 4 to 10 or 20. 4 is not useful at all if one works in a big project and has ~30 files open, therefore it was useless for me "by default".
Comment 4 Mickael Istria CLA 2018-01-16 10:11:10 EST
I think it's a good idea, and Andrey's addition is good too. If we have a single entry, we could also move it to the top, as part of the "Open" group.

Example of the proposed UI

Attached you see a sample implementation, where I decided to add the "Open Recent" menu to the top, with 10 elements displayed. Also in Atom and VSCode the open recent menu is similarly to the top of the file menu.

What do you think?

The proposed change adds a "Open Recent" menu to the top of the file menu.
The new menu has 10 items by default.

Here is what we could easily change:
- name and position of the submenu
- format and number of the items in the menu
- add one last menu item to clear history

I love it. What about using "Recent documents..." instead of "Open Recent"? I think this more descriptive.

> - add one last menu item to clear history

Great idea, I suggest to solve this via a new bug.

Sorry, the dots were wrong. Suggestions to use: "Recent documents" instead of "Open Recent"

WDYT?

Very cool, thanks Patrick. Please also add to N&N.
Comment 15 Patrik Suzzi CLA 2018-02-09 14:07:14 EST
Sure, let me first add a "Clear History" item with bug 530966
Comment 16 Michael Keppler CLA 2018-02-10 02:07:36 EST
Do you really want to call that "Recent documents"? The term "document" is not used anywhere in the Eclipse workbench (there are zero matches in the workspace preferences and almost zero matches in Ctrl-3). Everywhere else we simply speak of "files".

I'm aware that "Recent documents" sounds more sophisticated than "Recent files" and may have a better UX for users that don't know all the inner details of file systems or workspace abstraction, but nevertheless, it seems inconsistent to me.
Comment 17 Mickael Istria CLA 2018-02-10 04:18:50 EST
Thanks Michael for this remark. I fully agree with it, we need some more consistency, and in the workspace, we talk about "Files" everywhere. Introducing a new term here (document) adds complexity to the software for users.

+1 for Recent Files

"Recent Files" menu

The menu text is now changed to "Recent Files".

Please, give your feedback also about bug 530966 - Add "Clear History" item to "Recent Files" menu

Looks good. I personally still would like to see more elements, let say 20. Now it has a dedicated menu, we have also more space, and why should we stop at 10?

It makes sense to me, also the change is minimal.

This was implemented by M5 IIRC.
