Screenshot

I noticed that the new Eclipse icon for Luna shows heavily pixelated on the Windows task bar.

Strange is that on startup (workspace selection) the icon shows smooth, but when the workbench is ready, the icon shows up wrong.

OS: Windows 7 Professional
Resolution: 1920x1080
Eclipse: Luna M6 x86_64(Build id: 20140312-2027)

Also the window icon looks pixelated.

I see this if I set 'make everything bigger, 125%' in display options. What's also curious is that it doesn't happen if the taskbar runtime icon stays with the taskbar shortcut icon that launched it.

Thanks for the hint. Yes my display options are also set to 125%

I have a new notebook and was not aware of that setting. Nevertheless it looks not good with that display option, while the Kepler logo looks good. :)

Sure, I didn't mean to imply that other size options shouldn't be used, obviously icons should look good in all of them. I noticed the different scale in the image and remembered seeing the same thing before which allowed me to put the 2 and 2 together. My comment was only meant to make it easy for people see the issue with their own eyes and point out that an icon associated with a process looks different than an icon associated with a shortcut. Maybe that gives some clues or something.

And the "extra data" is much appreciated.
(Just wanted to comment so everyone would know this bug isn't being ignored ... there's several "related" ones).

Maybe you misunderstood my comment. I really wasn't aware that my display options was set to 125%. So your comment is of great value to see when the issue occurs.

Just to document it ... I don't think this is exactly "M6" or else is not exactly "Eclipse SDK".

I was reviewing some changes and purposely installed the (now old :) M6 on windows, and see "Build id: I20140306-1200" in the about box.

Being approximately one week later, implies you have an EPP package installed.

Remember which? "Standard"? ...

Or, was it really an I-build you got after M6?

It appears to me, for M6, we did not have all graphic changes in yet, not even in "platform", so would also have not been complete for EPP packages.

You can confirm details if you recall, but probably even better is to get "pure SDK", from recent I-build, such as from
http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops4/I20140415-0800/

and see if you see the same problem.

(I see _lots_ of problems with M6 SDK ... far worse than what's in this bug, which is what makes me think we were in the middle of things for M6).

diplay set to 125%, but task bar icons set to small

Take a look at this! If you think you were seeing something ugly :)

(If I set the task bar icons to 'large', which is what I think is the default, I do see more of what what is in your screen shots ... not sure we'll see that too much improved, but I think subsequent versions improved it some).

I'm mostly pointing this out to illustrate there are LOTS of test cases to make sure Windows icons are working as expected.

Your help is appreciated.

Luna SDK M6 had Kepler 256 icon in ico file

This is another screen shot that tells me M6 was "in the middle of things".

Notice how the "eclipse.exe" has the right "icon", but the large icon in bottom of Explorer, in status area, is still the Kepler icon!

Haven't seen that in a while ... hopefully you won't either! :)
If so, (in recent builds) then there's "more than one" problem going on.
Comment 11 David Williams CLA 2014-04-28 14:11:38 EDT
Can any of the commenter's on this bug try an I-build from today or tomorrow and comment if "good", "good enough", or "unchanged" ... it's hard for me to tell ... may depend a bit on back ground, or something (but, does look better on my machines).

And please try "pure SDK" or even "binary platform" if you want a smaller download to test.

Such as from
http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops4/I20140428-0800/

Comparison of desktop set to 100% and 125%

Looks good to me, although I didn't recreate my exact steps when confirming the bug earlier (I wasn't paying much attention at the time). I see unrelated differences though, quite a few actually :)
Comment 13 David Williams CLA 2014-04-30 12:09:33 EDT
based on comments, I'm going to count the worst of this as fixed for M7.

But, I think further improvements are possible, and have opened enhancement request bug 433868 we future enhancements can be discussed/proposed.
