(And the associated manifest syntax.)

JDT is not the only plugin that might want to display different icons based on 
the nature of a marker.

Yes, please make this public. This request has been out there for almost a year 
at this point. Having a public extension point, 
org.eclipse.ui.ide.markerImageProviders, require a private interface, 
org.eclipse.ui.internal.ide.IMarkerImageProvider, seems very odd. It also 
causes problems for plugin providers wishing RFRS certification.
