Description Holger Voormann CLA 2008-09-21 16:31:52 EDT
Problem:

The search scope is remembered as long user is not set a new scope (Eclipse integrated help: associated with workspace; online help via web browser cookies).
Unfortunately, a set search scoped (displayed at top of help window/web page) can be easily overlooked.

Proposal:

In 'Search Results' area, when search scope is set show before first result: "Scope: 'MyScope' (Disable)"

"Diable" should be a link which disables search scope ("Search all topics") and reruns search. And/or after last result add "Search all topics" link with the same functionality.

Mockup: show scope at top of search results

If you call Google from Germany then a closable filter "Seiten auf Deutsch" (= "Sites in German") is shown at the top of the search results. Similar to that the scope - if a scope is set - should be shown at top of the Search Results tab (see mockup) and at top of the Contents tab.

Scoping is very helpful but a scope is also easy to overlook especially if a scope has been set some time ago and the help system has not been used in the meantime.

I just implemented something very similar to that to fix Bug 305895.

Screenshot showing search results with scope name

This screen shot shows the scope name above the search results. The same fix will be made in the Help View when Bug 308907 is fixed.
