It would make the text search much more useful if it had the ability to search inside of zips/jars/other container files. I often import all of the eclipse plugins into my workspace in binary form, and then convert just the plugins I need to work on to source form. When I go to search I get fewer (or no) results because all of the source is in zips.
not for 2.1

Reopening to change assignment.
This would be a very interesting feature. If it just searches in archive resources, this would force users to import plug-ins as binary. To even support searching in jars / source attachments on the classpath, the search plug-in would have to allow a text search contribution from the JDT plug-in. But already search in archives in the workspace would be a big win.
It's not something search can do alone: We need a way to open zip file entries in editors, need to show them in the navigator and package explorer ect. John has discussed some ideas of doing that with EFS. I don't know if there are still plans in core.resources.
There is a bug 23265 for full support for zips in the workspace.
setting to remind until resultion changes for bug 23265.

In order to search in JARs and attached sources the EFS support (bug 23265) won't be enough. Search will have to provide an extension point for search participants.
15 years later and there is still no solution to this problem...wow
