Build ID: 3.2.1 Steps To Reproduce: 1. Open Java Perspective 2. Open Package Explorer view 3. Click the small arrow in the top right hand corner of the Package Explorer view menu 4. Select Filters... 5. Select Name Filter Patterns 6. Now you can enter any filter into the text field (eg. *.contrib) ** This cannot be done in Project Explorer or Navigator Views. ** More information: This is a feature enhancement, but it should be available to allow users to filter according to their needs in any view.
The documentation on how to set personalized filters could be improved. Took quite a while to figure out how to do it even with Package Explorer view (because did not know that need to be in Java Perspective).
Currently, I use the Package Explorer for all my projects (Java and non-Java) because it is the only view of the workspace that provides name filter patterns. The lack of name filter patterns in the Project Explorer is the only thing stopping me from switching to it and realizing the benefits of having both Java and C++ projects displayed appropriately.
Confirmed on Linux too. This is very a desirable feature. Alternately, the ability to add trash file types, ie: vi backup files and then choose to not display those would work as well.
Our Eclipse based application does not contain JDT plugins, so that it is just impossible to have a view on local file system with name filters. This is MOST WANTED feature for our customers. Please consider to add this to the CommonNavigator view.

May be this bug can do something like this brand new "Eclipse Resource Filter" plugin: http://sourceforge.net/project/screenshots.php?group_id=236410&ssid=88776 Unfortunately there is no source provided and I also do not see under which license the plugin is...

Looks like they have done some interesting stuff.

duplicates of Bug 226046?
it would be great some kind of lupa in the view tool bar where you can quickly add an expression to filter the project you need to access.
