Re: [science-iwg] Project recommendations

For similar reasons JSR 363 also uses New BSD as default license for RI and other libraries.
There's some understanding issue with legal about the role of the "Spec License" for those libraries that are JCP standard JSRs, but I'm sure, Mike or Wayne, both representing Eclipse in the JCP EC may help clarify that where necessary;-)

Thus If even dual-licensing with (L)GPL is hard, then SCaVis looks pretty much out of the game, unless they chose to completely switch everything to EPL or a similar license, too? (like Bio7;-)

Marcel,

Thanks for the clarification. If you're in Kiel maybe we could have a chat
and beer some time while I still work here (till late May)

I have not analyzed in detail which parts of JScience you use, but thanks
to CQs raised by projects like SmartHome  we hope to get the successor to
JSR-275, 363 into Orbit pretty soon, too. How soon projects like GeoAPI or
JScience pick up the new standard I can't say, but it allows streamlining
earlier APIs like 275 over time. And should you use any of the
javax.measure part of JScience I'd certainly recommend moving to JSR 363
implementations soon, since it should get a final release unlike 275 soon
;-)

I have to be honest: I am not sure that I could get the Eclipse Board to
agree to an LGPL-licensed project at Eclipse, even if it is
dual-licensed with MIT or BSD. It is not completely out of the question,
but it would most certainly be a significant risk.

Would EPL+BSD be an option? I am not a lawyer, but I cannot think of a
scenario where that combination would harm the existing adopters. Anyone
using the code from the (L)GPL world would continue to do so under the BSD.

FWIW, that is essentially why ORNL's default OSS license is New BSD.
