OK so it turns out that the PNG thumbnails were *multipage* PNGs (animated
GIFs, pretty much!), since I quickly generated them from the 2-page PDFs
without paying much attention.
I didn't even know PNG allowed that – and it looks like Chrome may not
have known either :-)
