Ebola Re-Emerges in DRC

Ebola has re-emerged in a DRC conflict zone home to 1 million displaced people, just a week after an outbreak in the west of the country was declared over. The 2 outbreaks are not thought to be related.

Mobile labs are being deployed in the North Kivu region near the Ugandan border, but accessing patients in an “active conflict zone” presents “major barrier” to response efforts, WHO’s Peter Salama notes.

26 people have reported signs of hemorrhagic illness signs, 20 have died, and 4 cases are confirmed as Ebola.

African media reported signs of a North Kivu outbreak in early July.
