Ok.  I can help identify the user-visible slow areas, if you'd like.

One thing that bugs me is the styledtext widget's update speed.  I think 
this might be the most important issue, since you absolutely *need* to 
use the text widget in order to do anything.  I just reported a new bug 
for it:
