Jochen,
Thanks for your comments.
The new pages look really good, but I think
this must be backed with more changes along the level below – e.g. the
projects pages and the pillars pages. Otherwise we are just delaying
the usability problem to a subsequent page.
We'll be tackling the pages below in due time. We're trying to improve
the website with small incremental improvements, rather than attempt an
entire site overhaul.
Also I think the new version of the homepage falls short in providing a
good list of things that users and committers want to do. Ecosystem and
members is great.
Like all things, the homepage won't be cast in stone. We'll improve it
continuously according to user feedback. Right now we are responding
to the feedback that our home page contains too much. We may have gone
too far the opposite direction, but we'll listen closely for feedback
indicating this.
Committers: It is not of great help for me as
a committer to get to the projects page. Instead I would like to see a
“what is going on” summary: Project proposals + reviews, upcoming
releases. And shortcuts to things like the development process, ip (CQ)
Faqs, maybe some of the latest newsgroup postings and bug reports
We have plans for a Committer landing page, but it's still in the
works. For now, perhaps the Committers link should point to
http://www.eclipse.org/projects/whatsnew.php
.
Looking at the new community page:
I think it makes more sense to combine the pillars with the “I’m
looking for” things.
Nathan and I have some ideas on how we can make this work while
improving usability.
Then we should implement a consistent and
meaningful landingpage for the three pillars.
I think it should provide a general description of the pillar, a list
of the “popular” projects (plus a “more” link) and then some of the
same stuff as I proposed for the committers page: latest releases and
upcoming releases, latest newsgroup postings, latest bugzillas –
restricted to the projects in the pillar.
Great idea. Can you please file a bug against Community/website to
track this?
The main projects page as it is right now is too generic to be really
useful. It should at least include links to the pillars on the top.
Great idea. Can you please file a bug against Community/website to
track this?
Thanks again for your feedback while we inch towards a better site.
Denis

Here are some updated versions of the pages I
sent around last week.
Homepage: http://www.eclipse.org/home/index-test.php
I’ve done some tweaking of the member section and included the
spotlight ad, after some discussions with Denis and Don this is what we
came up with in terms of a layout. I’m open to suggestion on how to
layout these ads along with the other content. But this is where we are
currently.
Users Page: http://www.eclipse.org/community/index_new.php
I’ve incorporated the Pillars / Categories / Types into this page, I’m
hoping that its obvious enough where you go on this page to see them,
so I’m not going to mention how you get to them. If you can’t find it
in the first 5 seconds after you see the page then I’ve failed in that
aspect and will revisit it.
I’ve removed some of the icons from the page and moved others on top of
the news feeds below. I’ve also removed the number of items that are
showing for each feed.
Keep the feedback coming, it’s quite useful.
