Re: [mddi-dev] Re: [modeling-pmc] MDDi archival

Rich, et al --

Just a note to say that July review dates are still being determined, and the MDDi review might be on July 23 rather than July 30. I hope that is OK. Please let me know if it's not. Thanks.

Hi Tom,

The Termination Review is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, July 30th.
Look for it listed in the next review call announcement.

As for MDDi participation, you're welcome (encouraged) to attend and present
your case.

Best Regards,
Rich

As discussed on the last Modeling PMC call, we are asking for a Termination Review and archival of the MDDi project. Unfortunately, a number of issues have existed with MDDi related to scope and contribution level for quite some time. An attempt to reboot the project following the departure of

I'm sorry to hear that this is your impression, although I do not share
this view.

On the activity side, it's clear from newsgroup and mailing list history
that the project is either not active, or not open and transparent:

http://www.eclipse.org/newsportal/thread.php?group=eclipse.modeling.mddi

Note that the last newsgroup posting on 04/11 with an offer to contribute to
the project has gone unanswered.

In fact some of the mddi members were contacted directly in parallel and
therefore this request has been answered via this channel.

Similarly, the dash shows CVS activity is quite low:
http://dash.eclipse.org/dash/commits/web-app/summary.cgi?company=y&month=x&p
roject=modeling.mddi

I think there are other projects with less activity in CVS.

Given the increased sensitivity to IP cleanliness concerns, a quick scan of MDDi's CVS repository (still in Technology, not yet moved to Modeling's
repo), a number of 3rd party libraries are present and provided in

was really wondering about, I did not know that this was something I had

I was not aware of this problem and it would have been nice to get a
pointer to that beforehand to deal with this problem.

No regular builds are provided, with the last one being from 13 Nov 2007, and the one prior to that dated 01 August 2006. It's recommended that all
Modeling projects provide releng using the common builder
(http://wiki.eclipse.org/Modeling_Project_Releng), though minimally it is expected that projects provide regular milestones and keep current with
underlying dependencies.

Ok, right this is something which is not in best shape. But it could be
improved.

The MDDi website indicates it's an incubating project, but it does not
conform to the list of requirements:
http://www.eclipse.org/projects/dev_process/parallel-ip-process.php#Conformi
ng

Unfortunately, I did not manage to bring the incubation logo on the
website, since I'm not experienced in PHP programming. But we can easily change the Bundle-names. However, MDDi is still in incubation, so it is
a non-conforming incubation project and clearly marked as such, as
several other Eclipse projects are.

Given the information above, it seems we should move forward with archival
of the project
(http://www.eclipse.org/projects/dev_process/development_process.php#6_2_6_A
rchived). Of course, the 3rd party libraries should be deleted before the
project is archived.

Again I'm very sorry to hear this and I wonder if there is a chance to
do anything about it.

The Modeling PMC hereby requests the scheduling of a Termination Review for
the MDDi project.
http://www.eclipse.org/projects/dev_process/development_process.php#6_3_6_Te
rmination_Review

Who is requested to schedule a termination review and what do you expect
from MDDi side for this review?

Thanks,
  Tom
