Re: [m2m-iwg] M2M Top-Level Project

Ben/Mike/all,

Thanks for starting the discussion. Given the strongest use cases and mandating standards like UCUM are all M2M in the widest sense, usually "Server to Server", but in the Healthcare sector it is often a device, then a healthcare or insurance portal, sometimes all the way to the actual patient or at least care taker, standards and meta-information for Semantics and Measurement Unit consistency may very well be positioned under such an umbrella, too, should it start to exist.

The "Science" IWG seems a lot less formal and fast-paced than this one, so while in theory the likes of UOMo or STEM could fit under a possible "Science" Umbrella along the lines of the Science IWG, at least UOMo makes most sense for M2M and IoT. Just look at all the new real life M2M projects like OpenXC or Xively or some of the more sophisticated Functional Languages like Fantom or F# that have this built into the language itself.

Hi Mike, all,

+1, definitely. I think a top-level project would really help to federate M2M projects under a common umbrella.
It would be good to discuss what domains we would like the top-level project to cover. At the moment the M2M IWG charter states that it coordinates the work around tools, frameworks and protocols for M2M ; which is probably a good basis for a top-level project charter. However, I think we should be more clear regarding the fact that some projects are targeting constrained embedded devices (Mihini, Paho clients), and some other target full-fledged servers (e.g. Ponte). Also, the M2M IWG as of today is very much focused on enabling M2M by providing the basic building blocks (device management, communication protocols etc.), while I think there should also be room for technologies that are further down the development chain, especially the ones allowing the development of end-user applications making use of M2M data.

>From a very high-level perspective, I'd like to have a top-level project with a tagline that could be "Connecting". Connecting machines to machines (embedded agents, protocols, brokers, protocol "adapters"?), connecting developers to machines (tools, debuggers, simulators, code generators ?), connecting end-users to machines (SCADA, visual dashboards, ?). What are your thoughts?

All,

The M2M working group has been pretty successful in recruiting projects. Has the time come to consider creating a new top-level project to help create a cohesive project community for our M2M technologies?

For those who are unfamiliar with them, top-level projects are the mechanism which ties a collection of projects in a particular domain to the Eclipse development and IP processes. It requires the creation of a project management committee (PMC), the appointment of a PMC leader, and having a written charter approved by the Board of Directors.

Benjamin,

I agree that writing the scope of such a top-level project will be
difficult. As we?ve discussed in the past, part of the problem is that there
are a number of terms out there that overlap in meaning: machine-to-machine,
internet of things, internet of everything, etc.  Coming up with a scope
that is inclusive but still finite is going to be a challenge. The M2M
working group has the same challenge.

I like your suggested theme of ?Connecting?. Are you suggesting that as a
potential scope statement, or as the name of the top-level project?

Actually, a bit of both.
Definitely a possible scope statement, but would also probably work as a name. Could also be a variation around "connect*": Connecto, Connect, ?
If we were to stick to having abstract words from the M?ori language, we could even go for Hono (Hono ? (verb) (-a) to join, connect) :-) It is probably way to early to think about names though, and I am not quite sure I am in favor of sticking to M?ori words and/or that I like Hono FWIW :)
