[m2m-iwg] Medical Services Gateway

The JAX article about Mihini explicitely points out that "Medical Services Gateway" connecting a wide variety of sensors and healthcare devices.

Was this just a theoretical example, or are there more concrete use cases already?

A big chunk of the healthcare industry and standard bodies like HL7, the CDI or Global organizations like WHO strongly recommend or mandate using standards like UCUM or LOINC for data exchange.

If that Medical Services Gateway was planned or exists in Java, then using Eclipse UOMo UCUM would be very easy. If most or all of the components in the diagram were to be Lua-based, then Lua support for the UCUM standard should be considered to meet requirements by e.g. HL7 and even HIPAA in some cases.

http://unitsofmeasure.org/ shows which UCUM support exist so far. There are at least a few Java libraries including JScience or UOMo, a commercial Win32 implementation, but no significant Lua implementation sticks out.

The only case where this product may support UCUM (as HL7 requires is in many cases internally) is a popular product called Iguana, using Lua at least in some parts.

Cheers,
Werner
