Jesse,

I ended up rolling it back. There were problems with some tests using cometd, that included the 7.3.0 version of jetty-io in WEB-INF/lib.
I've been able to achieve what I want without changing the API for now, so I'm happy.

I'll probably start the 7.3.1 building later today.
