[eclipse.org-membership-at-large] Project Declarations for Enablement, RSP, and Linux Distro

Project Declartion for Enablement

The Project Management Committee for the Eclipse Data Tools Platform (DTP) declares its intention to propose a new project within DTP (http:// www.eclipse.org/proposals/enablement/). This project, named “Enablement,” will serve as a gathering point of community support for DTP frameworks and tools. Committers on the Enablement project will provide components leveraging DTP extension points and API for specialized uses. For example, a vendor joining the Enablement project might provide components supporting their particular data source using DTP. The deliverables from Enablement will be distributed separately from the core DTP frameworks and tools. Thus, the Enablement project will benefit the Eclipse community at large by providing broad and deep support for DTP for
specific targets.

Project Declaration for Rich Server Platform (RSP)

A new project called "Rich Server Platform - User Interface Framework (RSP-UI)" has been proposed as part of the Eclipse Technology Project (http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/rsp/). Eclipse Rich Client Platform (Eclipse RCP) has been successfully established as an application platform for the client-side. With the recent acceptance of large parts of the OSGi specification as a JSR (291), widespread application of OSGi for server-side applications has become natural. Recently, the Equinox Incubator has begun applying the Eclipse/OSGi concepts to the server-side. This opens tremendous new possibilities for Eclipse as an application platform for the server-side. The Eclipse/OSGi development model, applied to the server-side, allows the creation of truly pluggable, componentized, server-side applications. Plug-ins can communicate at a logic layer with each other using established and tested methods, such as extension points and OSGi services. What is needed for the UI layer is a UI composition framework which we propose in the form of RSP-UI. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------

Project Declaration for Eclipse on Linux (Linux Distro)

The Eclipse on Linux (Linux Distro) Project proposes the formation of an Eclipse on Linux Working Group (http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/ linux-distro/). The intent and goal of this working group would be to identify and address issues pertaining to the adoption of Eclipse on Linux, making Eclipse use on Linux more powerful and more widespread. While the Eclipse IDE has been widely adopted, it has not enjoyed particular success on the Linux platform. The open source heritage of both Eclipse and Linux would lead one to assume that Eclipse on Linux would be highly successful, but this has not been the case. An organization focused on identifying and addressing the pertinent issues could have a great positive impact on the adoption of Eclipse on Linux.
