Just a reminder. If a new Eclipse icon is in the works, we need a high resolution 128x128 icon with 8 bit
alpha mask for MacOS X in *.icns format.
I will install it in the application bundle.

coming soon :)
Comment 2 Andre Weinand CLA 2005-06-10 20:05:32 EDT
I have released the new icon to the Eclipse application bundle inside the platform-launcher.
However, I did *not* tag the project.

I like the new icon. See attached screenshot.

OK, after two days of use here are my impressions:

I like the new icon more than the old, but it doesn't make good use of the Mac capabilities:

- the four rings look clipped at the edge of the sphere, resulting in a 2d (flat) look; why not extend the
rings somewhat in the space around the sphere and use a transparent shadow underneath them

- in comparison with other apps (Lotus Notes, iChat, Netscape), the Eclipse icon doesn't appear as
"glossy" as it could be. Yes, not all icons have to look like water drops, but the Eclipse icon has a very
basic geometric shape which suggests to use a glossy effect.

- the icon colors are neither saturated nor bright and make the icon look dull (grey) especially at small
sizes (see the third attached screenshot which shows the Eclipse icon in my Dock)

re Comment #6 -

re stripes:

We tried having the stripes extend beyond spheres for Win but this was
problematic for 2 reasons (see attachment to follow):

1. The drop shadow effect did not look good in smaller sizes and on different
background colors
2. The size of the spheres was reduced to accomodate the width of extended
stripes, resulting in less impact in the image compared to other WIN icons,
and especially in 16x16 size

"Cutting off" the extended stripes creates a stronger iconic image, and even
though the MAC dock icon is large enough to overcome this, we need to keep it
consistent with what we are doing in smaller sizes on MAC, and with cross-
platform desktop icons.

re color and gloss effect:
We can tweak to refine these.

Is this obsolete now?

As of now 'LATER' and 'REMIND' resolutions are no longer supported.
Please reopen this bug if it is still valid for you.
