Description Jacob Robertson CLA 2005-05-04 09:19:32 EDT
By adding icons to tabs (on views within a group), eclipse got prettier, but it
also ate up some real-estate. I used to be able to fit 4 views in a group
before they got pushed off to a menu, but now I can only fit 3 in some cases.
This is because the active tab displays the icon. I would suggest some
customization capability to allow a selection of one of these options
1) show only icons
2) show only label
3) show both
4) show both on active
5) show only icons, with both for active
6) instead of minimizing tabs to a menu, first try putting just icons

Where I personally would use either 5 or 6 because Eclipse is much more usable
when I can see all my tabs rather than just 3-4 and using option 5 or 6 would
make many tabs visible.

FYI, the component examples plugin contains an experimental presentation with
this feature.

I own the code but not the look & feel. Moving to MvM to pass along to the
usability folks.

Another thing I'd like to add to this is that When you have a number of views
docked together, you don't open and close those views very often. That's kind
of the point of docking them like that, so you use the tabs to navigate,
rather than clicking the X to close a view. (bear with me) So, clicking the
X is actually the exceptional case, not the normal case. Why not have an
option to not show the X. Then, you could still right click on the tab to
choose to close it. The key here is real-estate - when you dock 5 things,
they quickly get pushed off to that secondary menu rather than being right
there - this is annoying. Look at the attachment I made - With the space
around the X and the size of the X it takes up almost as much space as the
word "JUnit" does.

Hmm... some comments:

*When you have a number of views docked together, you don't open and close those
views very often.

- agree

That's kind of the point of docking them like that, so you use the tabs to
navigate, rather than clicking the X to close a view. (bear with me) So,
clicking the X is actually the exceptional case, not the normal case. Why not
have an option to not show the X. Then, you could still right click on the tab
to choose to close it.

- it is important however for a UI to have both affordances and menu options for
important functions

The key here is real-estate - when you dock 5 things,
they quickly get pushed off to that secondary menu rather than being right
there - this is annoying.

- see my attachment, only one view has a close box not all 5

Look at the attachment I made - With the space around the X and the size of the
X it takes up almost as much space as the word "JUnit" does.

- there is a bit of an optical illusion going on with the curve there as well,
take a look at my 2nd attachment, maybe you should use this style of tab if you
are concerned about space?

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
