Most applications allow you to close the Find/Replace dialog by pressing enter. Deviations from commonly used user interface procedures is a hindrance to many users. Example, I had posted about the Find Toolbar in Firefox on the mozillazine forums, asking if it was possible to enable the dialog. The thread recieved a lot of hype, and resulted in the RetroFind extension. http://s93731204.onlinehome.us/firefox/retrofind.html Adding something in the configuration of Eclipse to allow users to close the Find/Replace dialog on first find would be a trivial but highly useful thing to have.
Interesting. I just realized a lot of windows apps find dialog doesn't go away on search, nor does firefox's even with the retrofind. Kwrite/kate/mcedit/nano/pico's all do, I guess I'm just used to those. Maybe it's 50/50 as to which way is done more.
We won't add this to the current dialog but we might enhance Find/Replace in 3.2. Leaving this one open as a reminder.
I'd also find this feature useful. After the Find dialog has done its job finding the first instance of a search string I don't need to see it again. Currently you need to press Esc to close the dialog. Once it is closed you can always use the Find Next and Find Previous keyboard commands (default Ctrl-K and Ctrl-Shift-K) which allow you to scroll through all the occurrences of your search term without the find dialog obscuring your view. With the Find dialog open it is also cumbersome to find the previous occurrence as it requires 2 clicks or more than a few keyboard taps. For these reasons I think we should have an option to close the dialog immediately upon pressing Enter.
This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet. If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
