Description David Williams CLA 2005-03-15 02:02:27 EST
Internet proxy settings should be moved to base, since effects VM properties
(and danger of conflicts if not
just one provided at a low level -- at best, user may have to fill in at
mulitple places).
Chris Brealey
have Chris contact Kevin with documentation pointers (and CC Arch. group), he'll
see if can be made part of
"update" component,
or, at minimum, reviewed by base team for 3.2 item.
Suggest Chris to report/review on 4/7

Short answer: Internet Proxy Preferences should migrate to Eclipse 3.2.

Long answer:
Kevin Haaland and I had a brief chat today about the origin, purpose and
destiny of the Internet Proxy Preferences page currently in WTP.

As far as we know, the nearest and only equivalent in base Eclipse today is
the "Proxy settings" group of controls found in Preferences -> Install/Update.
As designed into the JRE and as demonstrated by WTP Web services, the ability
to configure firewall proxy settings is a general purpose feature and should
not be tied specifically to Install/Update.

Kevin and I agreed that WTP's Internet Proxy preference page should be migrated
to the Eclipse base, and that Install/Update's option should either be removed
or be replaced by a handy link to the common Internet Proxy preference page.

The two preference pages share the JRE's properties and play fairly nicely
together today, so the purpose of the migration effort is, to paraphrase Kevin,
one of hygene vs. a fix to broken behaviour.

As Eclipse 3.1 is winding down, Kevin suggested Eclipse 3.2 (and WTP 1.x?) as
the appropriate time to migrate the page.

Kevin,
we reviewed this item on the Eclipse WTP Architecture Group call just now, and
decided to crank open an enhancement against the Eclipse Platform. Rather than
open a new bug, I've simply assigned this original "WTP architecture" bug
(complete with some useful history) from the WebTools product to the Platform
product, and am changing its severity and priority to "enhancement" / "P2". As
we discussed, can we target this to Eclipse 3.2?

PS: I also heard from David Williams on our call today that WebDAV tools may
have endured some collisions with WTP's internet proxy page around JRE's proxy
settings.

PPS: I'm assigning this to you, Kevin. You can reassign it if appropriate, or
reject it if I should be opening a fresh enhancement bug instead.

Thanks - CB.

FYI: Please see https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=93219 for some
discussion around insuring internet proxy preferences are loaded into the JRE
as required. The current mechanism by which they are loaded in Eclipse WTP is
prone to some trouble.

Please also see https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=123108 that will be solved if the internet settings move to base.

When considering resolving this issue, my opinion is, that a hook for temporarily changing the Authenticator should be added, as described in my blog on https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/weblogs?blog=/pub/wlg/3937. Unlike the proxy, the Authenticator cannot be set individually per HttpURLConnection. Thus, a hook for temporary changes should be provided as well as a strong recommendation at prominent location _not_ to use java.net.Authenticator.setDefault(java.net.Authenticator).

Hey Richard, from your note and blog, sounds like you know what you are talking about ... whould be a good items to "volunteer" for. Last I heard, know one's been found yet.

I'd be glad to do that. However, I will need the commitment of my management for that which may take some time. I will get back to you as soon as there is some news on that.

It looks like this bug should be returned as a duplicate of bug 154100. David, Dejan - do you agree?

Depends on ... dup ... ? I sort of prefer the current 'depends on' ... helps remind us to 'test', make sure requ. satisfied, etc., whereas 'dups', sort of get lost as "no additional information". But ... I'm game either way.

Thanks David. I don't have much of an opinion either way. I'm on the cc. list for bug 154100 (you might want to add yourself too) and have just posted a comment there about the sorts of network management goodies we need for the sake of WTP users, and the importance of it to us.

Go to "start".."run"..type in msconfig then click on "startup"..uncheck anything slowing your system down then click on "Services" and do the same...then you'll have to reboot...when system reboots it will prompt you about the changes you made...just check the box on the bottom left side saying..."don't show this message again"
