I left I20050215-2300 running overnight. When I came in this morning it said new updates were available, would I like to install them? I said yes, and it opened the Search Results window. However that window does not list any updates. It says No updates for the currently installed features(s)found, try again later. (sic: note no blank between ')' and found). The option to Show the latest version of a feature only is checked, and the option to Filter patches included in other patches is unchecked. However changing those options does not have any effect. All the buttons were grayed out except Deselect All (which was wierd because there was nothing to deselect) and Cancel. When I clicked Cancel it gave me the Automatic Updates dialog again. "New updates are available and downloaded. Do you want to review and install them now?". I selected Yes again, got the empty Search Results dialog again. Cancel, repeat. So the next time I said No. I got the first "New updates are available..." dialog again, yes/no. Either way leads to infinite repetition. I'm unable to use Eclipse or even see the Workbench window currently. :-(
There is nothing in the .metadata/.log file. I started a packet sniffer (Packetyzer) on the machine and Eclipse is not making any http requests during this whole process. Let me know if you need anything else. I'm going to backup my configuration and .metadata and try killing the process and seeing if it will come back up.

Ed, how did you set up your autmatic updates? I set it to search on startup, I get no results, but I can cancel and nothing else unexpected happens.
Killing java and restarting let me start Eclipse. Here are my install/update settings: Install/Update Maximum number of 'istory' configurations: 100 Check digital signatures of downloaded archives: checked Valid updates: equivalent Update Policy: blank Enable HTTP proxy connection: enabled, address and port filled in Automatic Updates Automatically find new updates and notify me: checked Look for updates on the following schedule: checked, Every day at 3:00am Download options: Download new updates automatically and notify me when ready to install them.
I reset the automatic update to trigger at 11am and the same thing happened. This time I captured a trace of all http requests from the Eclipse process. It took about 15 minutes to discover there were updates. It's interesting that it's reading the HTML from the update sites in addition to the site.xml and the content of all the feature jars. Thanks Ed. The trace is interesting... Why is eclipse 3.x looking at the update site of 2.x ? Also, I did not see any GET for html. Which html were you mentioning? I have set up my update for 12:00 and will report my findings at that time.
Gets for url's like http://download.eclipse.org/updates/3.0/ return html. Anything that's not a .jar or .xml probably does. I've had these options forever so some change between I20050209 and I20050215-2300 caused the problem. Where's the list kept that determines which update sites should be checked? I probably have some old stuff in there that you don't have.
Created attachment 18055 [details] Manual search results If I do a manual search for updates (Help > Software Updates > Find and Install > Search for Updates of the currently installed features) then it does not hang and I see something in the Search results (see attached).
OK, I am able to reproduce it now (with 12:00 searches). Update sites are picked up from the installed features, by looking at the each feature.xml and picking the <url><update url="..."/> value. For 3.0 features, the update site should be http://update.eclipse.org/updates/3.0/ but older ones had it http://update.eclipse.org/updates I see what you mean about html. Update checks the site url as passed in (so no site.xml ending), and if it the input (in this case html) does not conform to site.xml syntax, it appends site.xml and tries again. I suppose this can be improved a bit, by first searching for something that ends in site.xml, etc.
Fixed. This was a regression introduced by the install wizard redesign (along with refactoring in automatic updates).
