I suspect this is a related to 
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=73226

but, since none of the discusssion in that bug actually reported a hang
(that I could tell), thought I should report this and attach 
thread dump.

I should note, I do (often) see the "IllegalMonitor" exceptions reported in
related bug, and I've only seen this hang once (but don't often open closed
projects).

It is a side effect of bug 73226
