It would be nice if the search dialog was modeless. I often bring it up,
then realize I didn't have the right project(s) selected to restrict search
to selected resources ... and then have to restart or retrace my steps.
(And ... after doing this for years, if I haven't learned by now, thought I
should at least document a suggestion for an enhancement :)

The scenario you describe happens to me as well sometimes, I use working sets in
such cases instead of closing and reopening the dialog.

I'd like to propose other steps to make search easier to use.

I can remember several times the search process being as long and convoluted
as: select file search -> type a search term -> click go -> realize it will
take to long -> click cancel -> select a project on the left -> select file
search -> select selected workspace only -> click go ->realize that it changed
the search term behind my back -> click cancel -> take a deep breath ->
carefully make sure to select the project and verify every field before
clicking go...

Not only does the dialog prevent you from changing the result set; it also
wipes out everything you typed when you select the working set and return.

 - Have the search dialog check for the selected area of the project resource
view specifically, rather than the last opened view. If you select a project
on the left, the search dialog should not care that you clicked on the editor
pane so you could <ctrl-c> something to search on...

 - Remember the most recent search as the selection of the search dropdown,
rather than just an entry. This fits in with the principle: "Always make the
default choice the choice that the user would want with maximum likelyhood."
Obviously if someone has gone through the trouble to select a word, this word
might be more likely to be relevant than the previous typed query, but I would
question whether this is true for whatever is around wherever the user leaves
the cursor. (It would be an interesting metric for a quality feedback agent...)

 - Making the dialog modeless is an interesting proposal, although you would
have to communicate selection changes to the dialog and there is also a
possible question of communicating this feature (plus any hidden dialog issues
that crop up)

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
