Description Thorbjørn Ravn Andersen CLA 2004-10-13 09:12:09 EDT
I often search for files with a special meaning to Windows but not to Eclipse,
which Eclipse then delegates to Windows to open. An example is a PNG-file,
where I basically do not want to work with the contents but the directory
containing the file.

I therefore type in the file name, and see several folders where this file
exist. i would then like to be able to right click on the folders and be able
to in some way work with the folder. Examples coul dbe:

* Show file in Navigator.
* Open folder in Windows or Navigator
* Just the "Open with..." functionality seen elsewhere.

Please clarify a bit:

You use the example of a Search, but are you really asking that we support some
more interesting options for folders (such as "Open with...") or that you would
like to see Search have some options that exist elsewhere.

Currently AFAIK the options you list are not available from the "Navigator" view
either.

After thinking it over, I think that the basic problem for me is that Eclipse
delegates the action to Windows immediately. What would solve my problem here,
is basically that Opening a resource which Eclipse cannot handle on its own,
would just show a grey pane, which in all respects (but for actual editing)
functions as an editor panel.

THe pane could contain a button for the "Open with Windows"-functionality giving
the same functionality as is seen today.

so are we talking about a folder anymore? This suggestion for opening a sort-of
simple grey edit pane on a selection seems to be talking about a file rather
than a folder, with the "Open with Windows" button.

Please don't misunderstand. I am a little confused, but I believe you have a
legitimate bug here<grin>

Feel free to reformulate the bug header.

What I have a problem with, is the disability to treat e.g. PNG-files like files
known to Eclipse, namely

1) Find them with "open resource" (Ctrl+Alt-R)
2) Let the navigator synchronize to the file.
3) Do whatever is needed in the navigator.

For the case where Eclipse delegates this to e.g. Windows, the syncrhonization
view is _not_ updated - which is what perhaps is the real bug.

This is low priority for us, but we would consider a patch if someone wants to provide one.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
