Window->Preferences--Workbench

There are a couple of preferences that are hard to interpret:

1) Always run in background
... Always run WHAT in the background?
    - the Workbench? (after all, this is the Workbench preference page)
    - the build? (but build always runs in the background...)
    - programs? (after all, it's an ide... <g>)
    - long-running operations? (if that's it, please say so...)

2) Refresh workspace automatically
    ... Refresh workspace automatically WHEN?
    - every couple of minutes?
    - after a build?
    - after something runs?

This would be something we should look at in the help doc

There are currently no plans to work on this although we would be happy to review a patch
Comment 3 Carolyn MacLeod CLA 2007-06-14 12:29:19 EDT
I'd be happy to provide a patch if I had any clue what was supposed to be running in the background or not. <g>
Note that "Always run in background" is now the first item on the "General" page, so the problem is even worse now. What runs in the background when this is checked?

"Refresh automatically" is now on the "Workspace" page. I see that there is a "Workspace save interval (in minutes):" field. Should this field say "Workspace save/refresh interval (in minutes):" ? Surely the workspace can't be refreshed in realtime - how would eclipse know that someone has made a change in the file system? It must have to go out and look... does it do that every "save interval" minutes?

As per http://wiki.eclipse.org/Platform_UI/Bug_Triage_Change_2009

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
