Even read-only cursor movement and scrolling are substantially degraded/ poorly 
responsive with a moderate sized block of pasted code in need of refactoring.

This block is 220 lines with 75 errors markers.

Poor responsiveness (5 seconds for scroll wheel activity to be completed) is 
probably associated with broken Ctrl-C shortcut in similar situations.

The poor performance indicates major inefficiency in marker display or data 
structures. I've noticed in the past that markers (error statuses, breakpoints 
etc) seem to be one of the weakest parts of Eclipse.
