On my Ubuntu the selected text is very hard to see in the light theme. See screenshot.

Would you please run SWT's ControlExample and attach a screenshot of Color tab making sure that COLOR_LIST_* are visible in it.

Default light Ubuntu theme.

Yeah but what's the name for it ? You can see it in About dialog Configuration tab with key org.eclipse.swt.internal.gtk.theme

Note how COLOR_LIST_SELECTION is orange on your screenshot. This points me to some issue with the theme.
