There is no way to update software - the error posted is cryptic - missing something ( Java ?)

Please attach a stacktrace and/or the .log file. Without more information your problem cannot be investigated.

To whom it may concern or who actually cares.
May I make a suggestion on to logically analyze and preferably fix a problem?
First
avoid generating artificial traffic by asking illogical questions and then pass the ball back to the originator.
I have minimal and grossly obsolete way to actually post a bug from within Eclipse CDT .
This and other bugs surfaced with Eclipse 2020-06 , therefore and logically it is ulikely the bugs are related to a hardware where other versions works just as expected.
I have searched my entire system and there is no “log” file related to Eclipse.
My suggestion would be to spent more productive time than writing superfluous
replies AND
1. download Eclipse 2020-06 “ installer “
( you will find that it has to be updated immediately and
you still cannot select installation folder (!) ANOTHER BUG )
and install Eclipse for C /C++ development (CDT)
2. run “eclipse” and browse for workspace
    ANOTHER bug !
( if you select default you get the annoying “wrong version...” dialog
for which there is no real solution )
3. run “eclipse” and attempt to
    a) install new software
    b) update software

and see for yourself what you get THEN shoot me an e-mail.
Then we can work on this as a team and FIX IT.

I understand that it is very confusing and frustrating that your eclipse install is not working. The eclipse install is a large eco-system, which contains many plugins. Without some additional information, we would not be able to help you at all. See [1] for some guidelines to get most out of a bug report. Note that I spending my *free* time on this, we are willing to help, but I cannot spend endless of time on trying to reproduce an issue.

I have many different version of Eclipse installed, and I don't seem to experience the issues you have. That made me wonder if it is related to the OS you are running Eclipse on. That is why I asked more details about that. See [2] for a list of environment on which Eclipse is tested.

You can find the .log file in the .metadata directory in the workspace directory [3].

If you have problems with submitting bugs from within Eclipse, I suggest that you use the web interface [4] directly. For instance, you can go to this bug with this [5] link.

Opened Bug 565551 to hide this useless dialog by default.
