Let's start by upgrading your eclipse to the latest version. I assume this happened after a mac update. Please re-open if the problems persists after upgrading.
I can't the applications I am using currenty must be running in this version of eclipse

Can you revert that? Why are the applications bound to 4.8? There is no technical reason why that should be the case. Is it still running but crashed at certain actions or is it not running at all.
The crash seems to occur in the garbage collector. Which version of the JVM are you using?
