Description David M. Karr CLA 2019-04-11 14:19:01 EDT
I have 2019-03 installed on both my Win7 laptop and my Ubuntu Linux VM, running on the laptop.

I execute "Restart" on both instances.

On the Win7 instance, Eclipse properly restarts.

On the Linux instance, Eclipse just exits, but doesn't restart. There is no error dialog or log entry.

I had read some other reports that mentioned issues with relative paths in the eclipse.ini file. My "launcher library" path was already an absolute path. The path to the "startup" jar was not, so I changed that to an absolute path. However, it made no difference.

How do you start it on Linux? Which are you using?

Ah, that was a very good clue, and it led me to understand why this is happening.

I initially launched it from the installer dialog, and then I locked it to the launcher, and that's what I've been clicking on to start it each time.

When I saw this question, I looked in the resulting desktop file, and I saw that instead of a simple path to the eclipse executable, the desktop launcher is executing the full Java command line with all the generated arguments.

I then tried commenting that out, adding a replacement line that just executes the eclipse executable, and then starting that and restarting it. That worked fine.

So, the problem is, we have to know what "Lock to Launcher" does, and edit the resulting file after creating it. It would be nice if Ubuntu had a way of asking the application what to specify when the user asks to "Lock to Launcher".

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet. As such, we're closing this bug.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it and reopen this bug. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
