Description Mickael Istria CLA 2017-11-16 04:26:00 EST
As mentioned in bug 513355, the Run menu hosts actions about multiple kinds of Launch Configurations (Run Configurations, Debug Configurations, Profile Configurations). The common name used in Eclipse UI and Code about Run/Debug/Profile is "Launch". So, for the sake of consistency, we should rename the "Run" manu to "Launch".

s/start/launch/ as we say more frequently ;)

+1 for "Launch" instead of "Run".
Comment 3 Doug Schaefer CLA 2017-11-16 10:48:31 EST
I prefer Run. Launch is an obscure term that I'm not sure users understand when they start using Eclipse. And long time users have gotten use to that menu containing launch related stuff.

Though with the launch bar, I never have to go to that menu anymore anyway :).

See, you called it the Launch Bar, not the Run bar.
Run has a specific meaning in Eclipse IDE, which doesn't include other kinds of launches.

I call it the launch bar. My users always have it so don't know what it's called or even realize it has a name.

My point is that I really don't care that much what you call it. Just responding since my previous comments were used above and my thoughts on that have changed. I just hope people don't see the Debug menu and start asking why we don't have Profile and Code Coverage menus, etc. If you do that, then Run makes more sense :). Anyway, whatever. Launch is fine.

Shall we proceed with the change?
Comment 7 Dani Megert CLA 2017-11-23 11:11:33 EST
This won't go in.

Running a debug *launch* configuration is also Launch.

I still prefer "Run"...
Comment 9 Mickael Istria CLA 2017-11-23 11:20:22 EST
I won't fight for this one.
There are obviously some kinds of blurry area brought up by the split of the Run menu, but those are very minor compared to the usability gain it brings. I have the feeling renaming the Run menu could help a bit and be more consistent with the other usages we have of the "Launch" term, but it's not a perfect solution for menus anyway.
So feel free to close it as WONTFIX, I wouldn't mind. Maybe I'll come back to it with more motivation and more convincing argument in the future.
