Sometimes the editor area's tab bar gets itself into a state where the tabs can either no longer be reordered or get reordered incorrectly upon drop. In the first case during the drag operation there is no 'vertical bar' affordance as is normally shown at the drop location (before the first tab, between adjacent tabs or after the last tab). In the second case the drop action results in the dragged tab being moved to the wrong index position. Sometimes the situation rectifies itself and normal DND operation is restored. Unfortunately I have been unable to discern what actions result in this broken state nor what actions restore normal operation. I have observed the problem in several successive Windows versions (7, 8, 10) and Eclipse 4.x releases and it's finally become so frustrating that I decided to lodge a bug report.
First of all, thanks for reporting! I'm responsible for a recent fix to D&D: Bug 497348 - Drag and drop of overflown editor tabs is broken. I would like to help to understand and fixing this new bug, and I will need further information: - which version of Eclipse are you running? (Ctrl+3 > Copy Build Id ..) - can you provide a series of steps to reproduce the issue? (perhaps Bug 497348 could help)
(In reply to Patrik Suzzi from comment #1) Patrik, if I recall correctly I have witnessed the effect when there has been no tab overflow. Per the bug report above: - the Eclipse version was 4.6, although I have seen the effect on several previous 4.x versions. - sadly I have been unable to discern any steps to reproduce the effect; all I can say is that I see it not infrequently.
Hi Patrik, I have a similar issue with the DND stop working but this is on 4.7M3 and M4. I added Bug 509729 with more details. Basically whenever you have more than one window with a editors or split editors. Then restart eclipse. In one of the windows you can no longer drag the editors at all either to reorder or drag to the side to split the window. To reproduce Open Eclipse Open two files in the editor. Drag to the side so that you can have a split view of the editors. Click on Window > Open New Window Open two other files drag one of the editors to the side. Restart Eclipse Now the two windows should reopen but in one of the windows when dragging the editor tab to the side you will always get the unmovable icon and you will not be able to move any of the editors in that window anymore.
This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet. As such, we're closing this bug. If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it and reopen this bug. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant. -- The automated Eclipse Genie.
