Mickael had an interesting idea: if we have a performance issue with a big number of opened editors, why don't we automatically dispose hidden editors but let them in the opened editors list, so that clicking on that "released" editor tab will automatically restore it? We can set an inactivity delay after that all hidden editors will be "disposed". 
This is definitely more user friendly as simply closing the editors.
