Description Thomas Whitmore CLA 2003-12-02 23:42:03 EST
The Back and Forward buttons, intended to move between editors & editing
locations, are not as useful as they should be.

They tend to take me to places where I had a brief look around and miss areas
where I performed much editing.

Don't know descriptively or algorithmically what is wrong with them, but they
could definitely be a lot more helpful.

Eclipse is a great product but working with many files open is one of the weak
areas. (Already know about autoclose/ pin editors, Ctrl-Shift-W, etc). So
perhaps this could be improved.

Regards,
Thomas

You can go back to your last edit location using the "Last Edit Location" button.
Please file problems regarding editor management against Platform UI.

Would you mind to tell us the expected behavior and some examples.

Thanks for your help. Locations which I wish the back/ forward buttons to visit
are those where I have been working. Typically this means edits occured there;
though multiply positioning the cursor or scrolling around a particular section
could be taken to mean that it is a significant site in terms of viewing and
inspection of the code.

In contrast, Eclipse picks up numerous non-significant locations; files which
were only briefly looked at, top lines of files since that was the default
cursor position on opening, etc. None of these are wanted and they largely
obscure the useful purpose of the back/ forward buttons.

Hope this helps, regards, Thomas

Further note on current Back/ Forward behaviour: this currently picks up
numerous nearby independent locations, when one has been editing a section of
code. Locations closer than, say, 12 lines, are not of any interest and the
clogging of the 'back/ forward' list with these makes it almost 100% useless.

My occasional tries with the 'back' button are almost always abandoned after
three or four presses fail to produce useful or logically desirable navigation
results; however my logical requirement should be straightforward, since I'm
typically looking for the second-previous editing area.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
