One use case for this need, it the possibility of producing patches, from repositories of "rebuilds" where nothing changes except, say, one plugin. 

What I found in bug 464587 is that this is hard with our current system because several features and branding bundles get "current build date" for their ID, which automatically makes them different than what has come before. Normally, that's a good thing, but not if we want to reproduce a build _exactly_ as it was before. 

I could not find an easy way to "override" the default behavior ... though, there may be one? 

The priority of this is pretty low, since there are other ways to produce "patched features" (requires use of a "dummy feature") but, did not want the issue to get lost.
