Description Kris De Volder CLA 2014-12-01 13:38:41 EST
The navigation history (Back Button) in Eclipse 4.4 (and I think probably all versions of Eclipse 4.x) is severly broken and hardly of any use anymore.

There are probably several things that got broken in the transition to Eclipse 4.0. Here's one concrete example:

The history remembers files that no longer exists and then tries to open them when you click on the back button.

This is extremely annoying. Sometimes trying to open non-existent files produces NPEs or other errors, though in most cases it just opens an Editor with a error message in it that the file does not exist. Even this is annoying and disorienting and makes you have to clikc the button additional times to get to where you wanted to go. Even worse, if you close this editor and click back button again.. it will still remember and keep opening it!

Here's an easy to reproduce set of steps.

 - open any project with source code in it.
 - open at least 2 files in separate editors
 - Delete the file you are currently viewing
 - click back button
=> Editor opens deleted resource and says 'Resource ... does not exist'.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet. As such, we're closing this bug.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it and reopen this bug. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
