Description Kon Tiki CLA 2014-07-02 10:28:44 EDT
I double click on any of my 4 versions of Eclipse (Juno SE, Kepler SE, Kepler EE and Luna SE) but after briefly flashing the splash screen, the whole app stops.

This has been happening since this morning, 11:00 UTC+1.

I initially experienced it when trying to start up my Kepler SE.
I installed Luna SE to see if it was a Kepler related issue.
But no dice here either.

With Eclipse I usually take updates as they are offered, e.g. every month or so.
Last updates taken were last weekend.

All Eclipse dependent applications, e.g. UML Lab, just won't start either.

So far I tried disabling the antivirus (Avast), disconnecting from the web, restarting and trying to open Eclipse anew.
But no dice.

Any ideas anyone ?

Anything in the error log? <workspace>/.metadata/.log? Any hs_err*pid files to show that the application SEGVed?

If it stopped working suddenly maybe a system update happened? Did your JVM/JRE get updated?

Have you tried with a fresh, empty workspace?

If that works for you, sometimes I've had luck "fixing" a workspace by opening a fresh empty workspace, and then use "switch to ...." another workspace, and check the box that says "copy workspace settings". You do, of course, lose a lot of special settings, etc. ... but ... that's usually better than having a non-functioning install.

But, be aware, a workspace used with Luna, is not compatible with Kepler.

If you have a Kepler workspace, and open it with Luna, you should get a message that says "not compatible, and once opened with Luna, you won't be able to go back and use it with Kepler ... are you sure you want to continue?".

Sounds like maybe something like that is complicating this issue.

I just arrived at the same conclusion.

My Java is not what it should be, I think, since the last update over the weekend.
The update process was very lengthy and I may well have terminated it before it crossed all the Ts.

On the command line, I get the following when I request details of my Java version :

<< Error occurred during initialization of VM.
java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError : java/lang/Object >>

I suppose a Java 7 reinstall is imperative ?

Java 7 Update 60 was its full title.
All 120 MB of it.

Java 7 Update 60 reinstalled.

All opening okay now.

Issue closed.
