moving caret dead slow if whitespaces are shown


moving the caret left/right in the main editor window is unbelievably slow (2-3s for update of position) 
if I move the cursor up/down it updates without delay (at the correct horizontal position)

I had the same problem in 3.8 and updated to 4.3 to see if it would be fixed, but no luck 


It seems like it would be similiar to these bugs but for the main editor window 
the ctrl-f Text fields are fine
